Rhodium Plating

Also known as "white gold dipping," rhodium plating is a popular jewellery service that involves applying a thin layer of rhodium, a rare and reflective precious metal, to jewellery. This technique gives the piece a brilliant, mirror-like finish and helps enhance its durability. Rhodium, part of the platinum family, is highly valued for its reflective qualities and resistance to tarnish and corrosion. This makes it ideal for jewellery—especially engagement rings and other frequently worn pieces—that may need an extra layer of protection and shine.

Rhodium plating is commonly used on white gold, silver, or platinum jewellery to provide a bright, pure white colour. Over time, due to wear and contact with oils, chemicals, and daily wear, jewellery can lose its lustre and colour. Rhodium plating not only restores shine but also enhances the lifespan of your precious items.

Benefits of Rhodium Plating

Rhodium plating offers many benefits, including:
  • Enhanced Brightness: The reflective nature of rhodium provides a brilliant white shine.
  • Hypoallergenic Properties: Rhodium plating is hypoallergenic, making it a safe option for people with sensitive skin.
  • Tarnish Resistance: Rhodium's natural resistance to corrosion protects jewellery from tarnishing, extending the life of each piece.
  • Colour Restoration: Rhodium restores the vibrant colour of white gold, helping older jewellery look new again.
  • The Rhodium Plating Process

The rhodium plating process involves several stages to ensure a high-quality finish. Here are the four main steps:
  • Preparation & Cleaning Jewellery is thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, oil, or existing tarnish. This step is crucial to ensure the rhodium adheres properly. The piece is soaked in a cleaning solution and sometimes treated with ultrasonic cleaning to remove any fine debris or residues.
  • Polishing After cleaning, the jewellery is polished to remove any surface imperfections and scratches. This step creates a smooth surface, allowing the rhodium layer to adhere evenly. Polishing brings back some initial shine, setting a foundation for the final rhodium finish.
  • Electroplating Bath In this stage, the jewelry is submerged in a rhodium solution and connected to an electric current, causing rhodium ions to bond with the jewelry's surface. The electroplating process deposits a thin, even layer of rhodium over the piece, creating a bright white finish.
  • Final Rinse & Inspection After plating, the jewelry is rinsed and carefully inspected to ensure the rhodium layer is smooth, even, and free from any defects. Once approved, the piece is ready for use, showcasing a fresh, dazzling finish.
Rhodium plating is an ideal solution for preserving and enhancing precious jewellery, ensuring each piece looks brilliant for years to come.
